Job Description

Job Qualification

Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA)

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Power Electronics Applications to join the research group of Dr Teng Long in the Cambridge University Nanjing Innovation Centre (Nanjing Centre) and the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. This post is mainly based in the Nanjing Centre but affiliated to the University of Cambridge and required to work in Cambridge, UK too.

The post holder will conduct a research project of 48V DC power supply systems for datacenter applications. This project will investigate the topology, power electronic devices, passive component, PCB layout and control of 48 to 12 and 48 to 4V DC-DC converter. The converter needs to have very high power density and efficiency and the rated power is 600 W or above. Full-scale, nearly product-level converter prototypes will be built and tested including the auxiliary circuit.

The post holder also takes responsibilities of continuously building the power electronic laboratory in Nanjing Centre including lab asset procurement and management. The post holder is expected to assist the Principal Investigator on commercialization promotion and further grant application. Minimum four weeks’ time is required for the post holder to work in the University of Cambridge in the UK.

The successful applicant must have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD degree; experience with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in converter design and development (gate drives, PWM, DC/DC, power electronics thermal analysis). Skills in modelling and embedded controller implementation (proficient in MATALB/Simulink/PLECS, DSP, FPGA/CPLD, PCB). Thermal modelling of power electronics and converters. Extensive prototyping and experimental experience of low voltage high power switch-mode power converters, extensive PCB design experience and capable of designing multilayer PCBs, using emerging SMD components, measuring impedance at high frequency, planar inductor or similar type inductive component design; excellent communication skills; experience of managing own workload.

Key responsibilities:

1. Research into switch-mode DC-DC converters (70%):

•      Power electronic circuit topology studies and review

•      Electro-thermal modelling of power electronics based converters

•      Power electronic device gate drives

•      PWM and control design and implementation

•      Inductive component design and prototyping

•      SMD components characterization and application, using VNA to measure impedance

•      PCB design, materials, techniques

•      Power electronics testing

•      Knowledge of datacenter application and ICs

Job Qualification

1. Education and qualification

Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD.

2. Specialist knowledge

Experience with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in converter design and development (gate drives, PWM, DC/AC, DC/DC, power electronics thermal analysis), knowledge in electromagnetic component design and prototyping, extensive hands-on experience with skills in modelling, embedded controllers, PCB design and inductive component design and prototyping.

Evidence of writing reports and presenting to industrial funders and at academic conferences. Evidence of working autonomously, meeting deadlines, setting targets, prioritising and taking personal responsibility.

Research Fellow in Ultrasound Imaging

Position Introduction:
The Cambridge University-Nanjing Centre of Technology and Innovation is looking for a highly skilled and motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop and implement novel ultrasound signal processing techniques for a range of applications in medical imaging.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Richard Prager FREng and Dr. Nghia Nguyen (University of Cambridge), and in close collaboration with the University of Cambridge, Nanjing University and Southeast University. The post holder will become a founding member of a new research group and help establish a world-class research program in ultrasound imaging applications. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or a related discipline. They will have experience in medical imaging (preferably ultrasonics), signal/image processing, and in scientific software development. The post is based at the Centre's new facility in Nanjing's Jiangbei New Area, with occasional visits to University of Cambridge in the UK, Nanjing and Southeast Universities, hospitals and industrial collaborators in China as necessary for the efficient conduct of the research.

Job contents:
We aim to recruit talented and motivated researchers to undertake research in one or more of following areas:
1. Develop new beamforming/signal processing algorithms to improve ultrasound image resolution, imaging contrast, increase frame-rate, and enhance the overall performance of ultrasonic imaging systems.
2. Develop image reconstructions for new applications of ultrasound imaging such as color and Power Doppler imaging.
3. Develop image reconstruction for photoacoustic imaging and/or photoacoustic/ultrasound hybrid modality.
The main goal is to produce high quality publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences.

Job Requirement:
1. PhD degree in one of the following fields: Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or related disciplines.
2. Good publication track record in the field of medical imaging and being first author of at least one paper in an international journal (written in English).
3. Self-motivated, able to work independently.
4. Excellent knowledge of signal processing and its principal applications.
5. Fluent in both English and Mandarin with excellent writing and communication skills.

2. Experience of working with instruments to control and acquire data (ideally using Matlab)
3. Experience with machine learning/deep learning.

1. During the work period, the postdoc may visit the University of Cambridge occasionally, where this is necessary for the efficient conduct of the research work.
2. The Centre has secured provincial level postdoctoral workstation accreditation, in partnership with Southeast University or Nanjing University. The postdoc will be provided an opportunity to be affiliated with one of those universities at the beginning of the appointment, and will be received a certificate from the affiliated university at the end of the appointment under good terms. 
3. The postdoc will be also encouraged to develop new research initiatives; she/he will receive support from the center to write grant applications and secure funding to develop her/his own research group, either at the center or other universities beyond this appointment.
4. The postdoc will receive assistance in applying for various talent policies in Nanjing and Jiangbei New Area through multiple channels, will enjoy the talent settlement policy, and then be eligible to apply for additional research funding and allowances.

Future development:
The Nanjing Science and Technology Innovation Center of Cambridge University will carry out business incubation and innovation platform construction based on the value of the results and the application of industrialization after the project is completed and the application results are produced. It will continue to deepen further scientific research and exploration in this field and generate new research projects in the area. The person in this position may get the opportunity to work on follow-up research topics.

The project is aligned with the development of the healthcare and medical industry, and will be conducted at Nanjing's industrial park in the Jiangbei New Area. It focuses on developing new algorithms to enhance the performance of medical ultrasound systems, implementing and testing on commercial products. The successful candidate will work with the newest ultrasound open platform, designed for ultrasound research community. It has an ability to control the transmit beamshape, access without any limitation to the low level data, and implement the new algorithms to generate anatomical/functional images in real-time. 
The project is led by Professor Richard Prager of the University of Cambridge. It draws on the expertise of the Medical Imaging group at University of Cambridge, and through collaborations with Nanjing and Southeast Universities. The goal is to conduct innovative research at international levels. Richard Prager received his Ph.D. degree in information engineering from the University of Cambridge in 1987. He founded the Medical Imaging Group at the Department of Engineering in 1992, where he has become a professor of engineering since 2008. He was Head of Teaching at the department from 2006 to 2012. From 2014 to 2018, he was the Head of the School of Technology, University of Cambridge. Since 2018, he has been the Head of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. Prof. Prager is a fellow of the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of Queens' College Cambridge. Recently, he was appointed as a Visiting Professor at Southeast University.
