“In the application process, the University of Cambridge not only evaluates candidates’ diligence and intelligence but also the passion necessary to handle Cambridge’s high-intensity learning pressure. These qualities must be demonstrated throughout every aspect of the application,” sincerely advised Dr Luis Perez, the Regional Manager for East Asia of Cambridge Admissions Office, during the “Applying to Cambridge—Postgraduate Study at Cambridge 2025” held on 13 November.

As this year’s application season for postgraduate study approaches, the “Applying to Cambridge—Postgraduate Study at Cambridge 2025” was successfully held in Nanjing in a hybrid online and face-to-face format to create a direct dialogue platform between outstanding domestic students and the Cambridge Admissions Office. The event was jointly organised by the Cambridge University-Nanjing Center of Technology and Innovation(CUNJC), the Cambridge Admissions Office, and the Nanjing Overseas Collaborative Innovation Centre (Cambridge, UK).

The event not only attracted participants from top domestic universities such as Southeast University and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics but also included well-known Sino-foreign joint universities like Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Additionally, the event was viewed online by over 1,500 people, receiving a positive feedback. During the three-and-a-half-hour event, Dr. Luis Perez provided online guidance on application essentials, Prof. Daping Chu, tenured chair professor at the University of Cambridge and Academic Director and CEO of CUNJC, offered earnest advice to young students. Several Cambridge graduate alumni shared valuable study experiences and offered targeted suggestions to the attendees.

“The University of Cambridge emphasises nurturing both the rationality and personality of students, which is a traceback to the highest purpose of education—acquire knowledge and develop wisdom through original research, as opposed to the utilitarianism of education for quick success and instant benefits,” Prof. Chu eloquently shared Cambridge’s educational philosophy at the beginning of the event. “The University adheres to the mission of ‘contributing to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence,’ so as to provide students and scholars with excellent academic standards and an inclusive supporting environment.”

This is why, in this place where ancient and modern, tradition and innovation converge, scholars can continuously conduct pioneering research work and the University of Cambridge can foster 125 Nobel laureates in total. In the 2024 Nobel Prize list, another four Cambridge alumni were awarded—Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics, and Demis Hassabis and John Jumper receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

“Committed to positively impact the world, the University of Cambridge regards partnerships and collaborative research and innovation as a way to tackle global challenges faced by all of us on this planet. CUNJC is exactly an important exemplar of the University’s implementation of this collaborative concept,” emphasised Prof. Chu.“

As the first research institution established outside UK in the University of Cambridge’s 800-year history, CUNJC aims to provide comprehensive support for Cambridge’s collaborations in China by integrating research resources and talents from the University of Cambridge, leading local universities, institutions, and industrial partners together, to transform the cutting-edge technology into business and market solutions for key challenges in China.

“Among the graduate students at Cambridge, there are a big number of international students from nearly 140 countries or territories, within which a vibrant community of Chinese students can maintain their individuality in each college, while are actively integrated into a larger community at the university level, that celebrates many cultural festivals, offers personal and academic support, and has established a strong alumni network across China,” introduced Dr. Luis Perez enthusiastically to domestic students.

Drawing from the British graduate education system, Dr. Perez detailed Cambridge’s advantages, application process, funding, and visa application suggestions. When discussing why to choose Cambridge for further studies, he painted a vivid picture of studying at Cambridge from its excellent academic resources, over 300 postgraduate courses, unique collegiate system, career guidance covering both academia and industry for graduates, and rich campus life. He also thoroughly answered numerous questions from students during the Q&A session.

Regarding the application for funding, one of the major concerns from students, Dr. Perez shared that in 2023, the proportion of Cambridge PhD and master’s students receiving full funding was 77% and 25% respectively. He particularly emphasised that the (UK Research Councils, RCUK) have recently opened partial funding to international students. Besides, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, 25 additional full funding  for international postgraduate students have been added this year.

In the subsequent alumni story sharing session, alumni from various colleges shared their Cambridge study and career experiences: Bo Fan from Girton College (Mathematics, 2012), Rongjian Che from Sidney Sussex College (Industrial Systems, Manufacture, and Management(ISMM), 2016), Daniel Liu from St Edmund's College (Finance, 2016), Wan Zhang from Churchill College (Finance and Economics, 2019), Chen Lu from Peterhouse College (Natural Sciences (Physics), current master's student, 2024), and Yuxi Xiong from St Catharine's College (Planning, Growth and Regeneration/Land Economy, master's in 2023, PhD in 2025). The atmosphere was lively during the on-site exchanges.

At the end of the event, CUNJC specially arranged focus group discussions for students interested in Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, and Planning, Growth and Regeneration/Land Economy. Alumni were invited to answer students' questions about application timeline, professional guidance, personal statement, contacting supervisors, teaching models, and campus life. Students eagerly asked questions, and alumni provided thoughtful and targeted guidance.

The 2025 event can bridge vast distances, connecting domestic students with Cambridge for their academic pursuits. Since 2021, CUNJC collaborated multiple times with the Cambridge Admissions Office to host several “Applying to Cambridge” admission events for undergraduate and postgraduate, proactively playing a hub role in enhancing the connectivity between the University and domestic students. In the future, CUNJC will continue to support and assist the university's educational work, fostering youth innovation and promoting international talent exchange.
