A “bridge of communication” linking the ancient city, Nanjing, and the University of Cambridge has been built along the Yangtze River. Nearly a hundred students aspiring for study at Cambridge engaged in face-to-face conversations with Dr. Luis Perez, East Asia Regional Manager from the Cambridge Admissions Office, bridging the information gap on overseas study.

On 14 April, 2024, the “Applying to Cambridge: Admission Event for 2026 Undergraduate Study” was successfully held in Nanjing. The event was jointly organised by CUNJC, the Cambridge Admissions Office, and the Nanjing Overseas Collaborative Innovation Centre (Cambridge, UK).

Students and parents from high schools including Nanjing Foreign Language School, the High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, Jinling High School, Nanjing No.1 High School, Yuhuatai International High School, and Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou attended the event in person, while over 1,000 viewers joined the session online.

During the event, Dr. Luis Perez provided guidance on application essentials. Prof. DaPing Chu, tenured chair professor at the University of Cambridge and Academic Director and CEO of CUNJC, offered earnest advice to young students, encouraging the young generation to boldly sail in the brand-new academia.

“Cambridge’s educational philosophy emphasises intellectual development and personal character, and the pursuit of wisdom, and it values a strong commitment to original research and the long-term accumulation of knowledge,” said Professor Daping Chu. “At Cambridge, every student benefits from personalised guidance and a close-knit academic environment. The university actively supports interdisciplinary and boundary-pushing research, bringing together students, scholars, and researchers from over 140 countries to make a positive impact on the world.”

Guided by this spirit of openness and inclusiveness, the University of Cambridge remains committed to addressing global challenges through partnerships and collaborative innovation. A prime example of the University’s commitmentis the Cambridge University-Nanjing Centre of Technology and Innovation (CUNJC). It is dedicated to integrating world-class research resources and global talent, while working closely with leading local universities, institutions, and industry partners to translate cutting-edge technologies into practical solutions that address key challenges facing China.

“Academic prestige, intellectual rigor and alumni influence, an intensive mentorship-based teaching system, independent learning and research, a powerful global network, a diverse intellectual environment, and a rich historical and cultural legacy—all these are compelling reasons to choose Cambridge,” said Dr. Perez. Drawing on the legacy of scientific giants throughout Cambridge’s history, he offered students and parents a vivid, multidimensional portrait of what it’s like to study at Cambridge. Outstanding academic infrastructure, world-leading academic excellence, abundant industry internship opportunities, a vibrant array of student societies, broad career prospects, and lifelong career support services.

Focusing on Cambridge’s distinctive undergraduate teaching model, Dr. Perez explained the different supporting environment provided at both the college and university levels. He emphasised the university’s educational philosophy, which begins with a strong foundation in liberal and interdisciplinary studies. From the second and third years, undergraduates delve deeper into specialised academic fields through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, independent research, lab work, and one-on-one supervision. In addition, he provided a comprehensive overview of daily life at Cambridge such as food, accommodation, and transportation, the collegiate system, minimum entry requirements, and the application process.

Aiming to deliver clearer and more targeted guidance on the application process, this year’s Cambridge Undergraduate Study Admission Event went a step further by introducing a special session exclusively for guidance counsellors from international high schools. Delivered directly by the Cambridge admissions officer, the session was designed to equip counsellors with the tools to better support their students, clarify common misconceptions, and navigate the application process more effectively. Attending counsellors unanimously praised the session as highly informative and practical.

Additionally, on the evening of the 14th, a “Gathering for Postgraduate Offer-holders of Cambridge” was held at the Centre’s Library. In a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere, alumni Zhang Hongliang from St. Catharine’s College (Class of 2008) and Xu Chao from Hughes Hall (Class of 2022) joined Dr. Perez to engage in warm conversations with prospective postgraduate students, sharing insights into life at Cambridge.

The path to innovation lies in attracting the talents. The University of Cambridge is a fertile ground for nurturing top global talent and driving technological innovation. As a supporting platform for Cambridge's comprehensive development in China, since 2021, CJUNC has assisted the Cambridge Admissions Office to hold annual admission events for undergraduate and postgraduate study for years in China. These events provide an efficient channel for outstanding Chinese students to directly connect with the official Cambridge Admissions Office.
